RFID-blocking wallets are designed to help insulate you from a very particular brand of electronic pick pocketing, called RFID skimming. Some credit cards, passports, and driver's licenses now come with embedded radio frequency identification chips. RFID blocking material is used in the manufacture of these wallets to prevent this kind of skimming. At Baron and Buxton we test these wallets to insure you are protected.
Banks, passport manufacturers and other credit card issuers are already starting to encrypt the information that is stored on cards, passports or licences in an effort to make this information useless to the skimmer. However one credit card we tested using NFC (Near Field Communication) reader on a mobile phone gave us all the details of the credit card, except the 3 digit number on the reverse. None of the information was encrypted.
RFID blocking wallets and bags in general do not appear to any more expensive or cheaper than standard products. Given the above information, it is very much up to the individual which product to choose.
